A
special characteristic in Prince Siddhartha, who was heir to the Sakyan
Kingdom and who lead a luxurious life enjoyint all mundane pleasures
living in three palaces called Ramya, Suramya and Subha was to inquire
into things he did not know and realize them realistically.
One day he left the palace for sports in the royal garden on a horse
carriage driven by a servant named Channa. On his way he saw an
emaciated old man with grey hair, sunken eyes and a wrinkled face,
doddering with the help of a walking stick with his body bent forward.
This was a time when a transformation was taking place in the mind of
Prince Siddhartha. Te Prince’s mind was greatly shaken by the sight of
this old man. Realizing that old age and decay was a common nature in
the world, he fell into deep thought. At that time he realized the deep
meaning of change. On that day he turned back without going for sports
in the garden.
On another journey to the garden for sports he saw a sick man groaning with great pain. That day too his mind was shaken as was on the first day. Having discussed those things with his driver, he realized for himself that all are subjected to sickness and suffering and that no one can escape it. On another day on his way to the garden he saw a group of people carrying a dead body. That day too he discussed it with his driver and realized that death too is a common thing just like being sick and old. As he contemplated on death, he realized the meaninglessness of life. Finally, he realized that what man experiences in the mundane life is nothing but immense suffering although he things it is pleasure. That day too he abandoned the journey to the garden and returned to the palace.
As he was embroiled in his own thoughts as to whether there is a way of freeing himself from suffering, he saw one day an ascetic with a content and radiant face walking calmly. After discussing with his driver as usual he came to know that whom he saw was a person who leads a contented life having discarded all mundane pleasure realizing the meaningless of material things. Prince Siddhartha was greatly relieved. He left for sports with a happy mind. He realized that it was a turning point in his life. It was as a result of seeing those four signs which acted as big stimuli on him that Prince Siddhartha embarked on his journey in search of truth, having abandoned all luxuries.

In 2009, His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa and 700 people spent three months trekking through the harshest terrain of the Himalayas to meet with remote villagers and nomadic tribes to assess their needs for aid and support. It was the first Drukpa Pada Yatra event and garnered wide publicity for its campaign to educate remote villagers and nomadic tribes about environmental protection and sustainable living.
His Holiness the Gyalwang Drukpa is the spiritual head of the Drukpa lineage, one of the main Buddhist schools of the Himalayas. Over four million Drukpa Buddhists live throughout Bhutan, Tibet, China, Nepal and India, and in several countries in Europe, North and South America, and Africa. The core philosophy of the movement is to address modern global challenges through active compassion.
Following on the success of the first Pada Yatra, several subsequent such events were held to promote peace and harmony as well as an eco-friendly way of living. His Holiness was invited by His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksha, President of Sri Lanka, to undertake the sixth Pada Yatra, which is also the first to be held outside India, on March 06, 2013. The Pada Yatra will take route from South to North, covering a distance of about 500kM and visiting holy istes such as Sr Pada, Kandy, Matale, Dambull, Sigiriya, Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura before concluding at Jaffna on April 6. About 240 monks and nuns from India, Nepal and Bhutan and several other participants representing `6 other countries accompany the Pada Yatra.

Inauguration of Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport

Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport
Strategically located in Southern Sri Lanka, the Mattala International Airport in Hambantota is being constructed to ensure the country is equipped with a second airport apart from the existing Bandaranaike International Airport and to increase Business activity in the region. The Airport project which will cost a total of US$209 million is expected to serve as an alternate airport to the BIA and with the capability of attracting increased business ventures to the region. The land allocation for the project is 2000 hectares out of which 800 hectares will be used under stage I. in this regard, 400 hectares will be used for the main airport infrastructure while the rest will be allocated for related industries. Construction of the airport will be carried out in two stages with the first targeting one million passengers per annum 45,000 MT of cargo per annum; 30,000 aircraft movements per annum; 10 parking bays for aircraft and two aero bridges with one for Code F type aircraft. Stage II is planned to target five million passengers per annum; 150,000MT of cargo per annum; 45,000 aircraft movements per annum; 20 parking bays for aircraft and 14 aero bridges.
By ensuring there is more economic activity generated in the Hambantota region it would assist in reducing the congestion in Colombo and its suburbs. It is also expected to provide a vital link to the tourism and hospitality industry that is mainly concentrated in the South of the country. In this respect, the airport’s presence would provide for the integrated development of the sea and air hub in the southern region. The runway at the airport is constructed with a length of 3,500 meters and a width of 75 meters that would be capable of accommodating code 4F aircraft. The taxiway is 370 meters in length and 60 meters in width with an apron that can accommodate 10 parking positions sufficient for the new airport. Some of the key elements found at the new airport are the passenger terminal building constructed on 10,000 square meter site, a cargo building on 1,000square meter site and an air traffic control tower built at a height of 35 meters. The new airport is equipped with modern state-of-the art equipment for its air navigation system. The passenger terminal will comprise of separate departure and arrival routes for passengers crating greater ease at the airport. The terminal would be able to process travelers from its 12 check-indesks, 10 immigration and emigration desks in addition to duty-free areas, airline lounges and VIP lounges.
The cargo terminal is equipped with separate Export and Import cargo sections and area for customs, airline, plant and animal quarantine, two cool rooms, a special vault for high value items, as well as other facilities. Infrastructure work has been carried out for creating improved access to the country’s second international airport on a dual lane ground access system form Hambantota, Embilipitiya and Thanamalwila that would link these respectively regions. The Hambantota region is expected to emerge as the most favored region as an international business hub in the future due mainly to its geographical location on the East-West shipping and air routes. It has been observed that the investor community is expected to gain from being part of this region due to the strategic location of the airport and ease of access from other regions in the country. Investors would be provided with ample space for facility erection; customs duty/tax free transshipment; warehousing facilities. As a distribution hub it would enable investors to pre-position for distribution and repackaging for the local and international markets. The region would become an increasing conductive environment for the investors since it would be the face of the international gateway with adequate banking and corporate finance in addition to development of infrastructure facilities and logistics. Moreover, the abundance of raw materials available with access to a persevering and creative workforce in addition to the availability of adequate real estate would ensure that this region becomes attractive for future investments. Arriving at the Mattala airport would enable visitors to the country to travel to the different tourists attractions in a timely manner. Available information has indicated that the airport would be 53km to the Yala wildlife sanctuary; 130km to Hikkaduwa coral reefs; 30km to the Kataragama holy City; 110 km to Arugambay; 138km to Kandy; 270km to Anuradhapura; 103km to Ratnapura; 94k, to Nuwara Eliya and last, but not least, 67km to Bandarawela.

RISGO Centennial- 2013 International Scout Jamboree
The
most prestigious Buddhist College of the hill capital, Dharmaraja
College celebrates her scout’s centenary in the year 2013. Being the
winner of the King’s flag and all Island merit flag scout group and also
the proud producer of a most outstanding scout of the Asia Pacific
Region, the 1 st kandy Dharmaraja Scout Group Organizes an international
scout gathering “RISGO Centennial – 2013” is scheduled to be held from
18th to 22nd February 2013 at the Lakeview Park International Scout
Centre, Kandy, Sri Lanka under the patronage of Chief Scout, His
Excellency the President, of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri
Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa. Over 5,000 cubs scouts, girl scouts and guides
representing all districts of the island and scouts representing more
than 40 nations around the world.
The event will be ceremonially opened by Mr. Abdulla Rashaeed, Regional Director, WSM-APR and will be followed by the unveiling of the statue of late Mr. J H De Saram, who pioneered scouting at Dharmaraja College. There will be attractive and adventurous scout activities organized for the foreign participants to witness Sri Lanka’s development projects and historical places will be a main feature in the RISGO program.
February 18th, 19th and 20th is named as opening day cultural, community service and Cub Scouts Day and Girl Scouts, Girl Guides and International Day respectively, while February 21 st will be the leaders and Old Scouts Day and February 22nd is the Founder’s Day to commemorate 156th anniversary of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the Scout Movement.

60 Years of Japan - Sri Lanka Diplomatic Relationships
On 28th April 1952, Japan and Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations when the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into force soon after the end of World War II. On 06th October 1954, Japan joined the Colombo Plan based in Sri Lanka which marked the commencement of Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA). Japan provided Sri Lanka with assistance equivalent to 1, 089 billion Japanese Yen (Approximately Rs.1, 525 billion) since 1965 at the end of Japanese fiscal year of 2010, in the form of grants, Yen loans and Technical Co-operation mainly by JICA. Mutual h8manitarian and emergency co-operation between Japan and Sri Lanka in the aftermath of the tsunami in Sri Lanka in 2004 and in Japan in 2011 too are significant. Japan also assisted Sri Lanka in rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts after the end of the conflict.
Approximately sixty Japanese companies are doing their businesses in Sri Lanka, and have contributed to creating employment opportunities, transferring Japanese’s technology, and introducing work ethics to Sri Lanka. Mutual friendly visits by prominent personalities such as parliamentarians, academics, artists, students and youth exchange programs have marked our long-standing friendly relations, Japan has extended co-operation to Sri Lanka in the educational field by providing Monbukagakusho scholarships for undergraduate, post-graduate and college of technology courses and also provided opportunities for youth exchange and human resources development in the public sector.
