The Methodist Missionaries who landed in the Gale Fort on 29th June 1814 established the Methodist Church in Sri Lanka.

Professor A. J. Grant in his history book titled “Europe in the last 500 years” has commented that the Methodist movement, pioneered by the Reverend John Benjamin Wesley, was equally popular among all sectors of society – from the city worker to the laborer and also among both the rich and poor. He further comments that the workers’ revolution among the coal mine workers in Britain was averted due to the Methodist movement in the 18th century and that this impact was of special significance. He states that the influence of the Methodist Church resulted in better relationships between employer and employee which in turn led to avert a workers’ revolt.

The teachings of the Methodist Church at the time was based on the biblical teachings of Jesus where Jesus talked about the “Kingdom of God” being established on this earth; a kingdom where the poor enjoy liberation from poverty, where there is freedom for those who suffer injustice and are in bondage and where the rich are motivated to use their wealth and time for the benefit of the poor. This is what is known as the “Gospel for the poor” and it is with this divine vision-a gospel for the people of Ceylon that Dr. Thomas Coke set out from England.

One of the top priorities of the early Methodist missionaries was to raise the literacy level of the local population. Professor Sucharitha Gamlath in his English-Sinhala dictionary pays tribute to Rev. Benjamin Clough, the youngest member of the Methodist missionaries who first came to Ceylon with his pioneering work in compiling and printing dictionaries in this country. Since John Wesley was the pioneer of Methodism, the early Methodist church was known as the Weslyan Methodist Church.

The Methodist Church was instrumental in regularizing the school structure in our country. When the school take-over took place, the Methodist Church had established over two hundred schools. Today, only Wesley College and Methodist College, both in Colombo, remain as Methodist schools in the island. Technical Institutions were also established by the Methodist Church in different parts of the island. The Seed Research Institute, Hingurakgoda, a Methodist institution, made an enormous contribution to agriculture in our land.

The Dutch first introduced the printing press to our country and today this has become the Government Press. Second to this was the Wesley Press, established in 1814 by the Methodist Church. M.D. Gunasena, one of our illustrious printing giants received his training at the Wesley Press. Many professionals, teachers, artists and politicians, who contributed much to our country, had their education in Methodist institutions. Among them are our current president, the honorable Mahinda Rajapkse, the Honorable Speaker Chamal Rajapakse, a former prime minister Wijayananda Dahanayake and a former president, Ranasinghe Premadasa our first Governor General Sir Oliver Goonathilaka and Sir D. B Jayathilake, a leader who worked hard to redeem Ceylon from British Colonial powers, were both distinguished old boys of Wesley college. Also Dr. C. W. W. Kannnangara, the father of free education, was a distinguish product of Richmond (Methodist) College, Galle.

In line with the decision taken at the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held from 05th June to 16th June 1972 in Stockholm, Sweden. The inaugural day of the Stockholm conference was declared as World Environment Day (WED). As a result of the Conference, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) was officially set up to undertake celebration of this day. Since then past 4 decades, it is hosted every year with a different theme.

Theme of the World Environment Day 2014 is “Small islands and Climate Change” and through this theme, the attention was drawn to small Islands and climate change. One of the major environmental challenges face by these countries are rise of sea water level due to climate change. Scientists have disclosed that the atmospheric temperature has been increased by 0.74 Celsius during past 100 years. Main reason for emission of Greenhouse gases is human activities. With the increase in volume of greenhouse gases that are added to the atmosphere, temperature of atmosphere also in the rises. As a result of this, climatic parameters such as rainfall, pattern of wind are changed and cause for climate change, Because of this climate change phenomena, Island nations are more vulnerable for floods, storms or typhoons. If we do not pay attention to the rise of sea level immediately certain Islands will be unsuitable for human inhabitance. Though Sri Lanka is not a small Island, it also has to face adverse effect of climate change together with other island nations. This situation paves the way to displace people living in coastline or suffer them from adverse effect of climate change. The objective of the theme of this year WED is to make aware of the world community in adverse effect created by human activities on climate change and mitigation it and prevent repercussions.

At present, with the growth of population, burn of fossil fuel, degradation of forests and mixtures many kind of atmospheric gases have created new challenges to human and physical environment. After beginning of industrial revolution, necessity of power had been gradually increased. Power generated through burning coal, fuel and fossil fuel were used for activities such as houses illumination and vehicular movements. Many small Island countries have successfully faced their energy needs challenge and found appropriate solutions. For example, in the Pacific region, national policies of Fiji and Vanuatu have introduced renewable energy sources instead of expensive power sources. They promote production through planting on degraded lands. In Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji, hydropower is increasingly being used for electricity production. The Island of Tokelau produces 100% of its energy from solar systems. Accordingly, in order to preserve limited physical sources, alternative power sources could be used and thus environment degradation could be minimized.

Hence, to make this year theme meaningful and to minimize climate change effects, citizens of Sri Lanka shall follow the following actions and need to consider they are as common responsibilities. Tree Planting, Use Electricity reservedly, Solid wastes recycling, Disseminate information among others on climate change, Procure/purchase environment friendly products, Use green energy, Purchase products with Energy Saving Labels (Stars)

The Great Renunciation of Prince Siddhartha
Prince Siddhartha, having decided to renounce all the luxuries and worldly pleasure on seeing for himself the four signs of the unsatisfactoriness of life was marking time in his palace waiting for an opportune moment to abandon lay life and to seek truth. His father King Suddhodana’s wish at all times was to see his son prince Siddhartha become the universal King of Sakviti. The king adopted various strategies to have his wish realized. However, Prince Siddhartha was not pleased with the worldly life.

One day, when he was in the royal garden, a messenger brought him a message that caused a great disturbance in his mind. That was the news of the birth of a little son to his consort Yasodhara. Thereafter, one day, after witnessing the sight of the weary palace dancers who had fallen asleep here and there making an ugly sight after performing of dances in the palace, he became disgusted with life. It was an incident that made him further unhappy with worldly life after witnessing the previous four sights of life.

Thereafter, having asked his close associate, courtier Channa, to saddle the horse secretly without letting anybody in the palace know of it, he looked inside the chamber where his consort Yasodhara was asleep peacefully in bed with little Rahula and leaving all luxuries behind in that night, left the palace in order to seek the truth that soothed the entire three world. The horse Kanthaka, carrying price Siddhartha on his back, crossed the ford of the river Anoma keeping in its heart the pain of departure from its master. Prince Siddhartha, alighting from the horse after crossing the river Anoma, handed over all royal ornaments worn by him to Channa and cut his hair with the sword and went into the forest to seek truth, leaving Channa and the horse there.

With immense love for the people, in 1911, he left the fatherland to go to the West to find the way of national liberation.

From 1912 to 1917, Nguyen Tat Thanh came to many countries in Asia, Europe, the America and Africa and lived among the working class. At the end of 1917, he left Britain to return to France to continue activities for the movement of the overseas Vietnamese and French workers.
